Tunisia - Тунис (07.2003)

A fascinating, but tiring trip as we covered the country from the charming northern Mediterranean town of Sidi Bou Said to the magnificent Sahara in the south.

Tunisia is the most liberal & progressive of all the Arab States. When they attained their independence from France in 1956, 97% of the population were illiterate. Today, 86% are educated. Women have equal rights & are educated. They are justifiably proud that Tunisian Air has 4 female pilots & that they have a higher percentage of women in parliament than most European countries. A beautiful, beguiling country.

It's Susan beneath those robes. At the hotel entrance.

  • Over the hills towards the Sahara.
  • Baby camel along the way.
  • Hotel Touareg. Douz, Tunisia. A dump at the gateway to the Sahara.
  • At the entrance to our hotel. Douz, Tunisia
  • Unripened date clusters in front of our Sahara hotel.
  • We rented our Sahara protection from the hotel. By the end of our caravan we're covered with a layer of fine, powdery sand everywhere - hair, nose, ears - even our teeth are gritting.
  • Outside our hotel. Ready for our Sahara caravan.
  • It's Susan beneath those robes. At the hotel entrance.
  • Camels waiting for us.
  • Sahara camel.
  • Camel being obstinate.
  • Susan in front, Rustem following; both looking very awkward. Takes getting used to.
  • View from above.
  • Off we go.
  • My "Lawrence".

  • The Sahara. Nothing but sand & sky.
  • Sand waves. Wherever you look, beautiful patterns of sand and dunes. The sand is ultra-fine.
  • Arabian knight?
  • My camel shepherd.
