St. Augustine, Florida (02.2010)

This small city of approximately 12,000, is the oldest continually occupied settlement in the United States. First visited by Spanish explorer, Ponce de León in 1513, it was settled by Juan Menendez de Aviles almost half a century before the first English settlers arrived. A lovely little town for a quick get-away.

  • We were so tired from our walk to the Fountain of Youth Park, we took the tourist trolley back to our hotel.
  • A 200 foot cross marks the site of the Mission Nombre de Dios, America's first mission.
  • St. Augustine's old city gates. St. Augustine used to be an enclosed city & these gates were the only entrance into the city.
  • New parking garage in the center of St. Augustine's old town.
  • The garage style is in keeping with the historic district.

  • The Villa Zorayda, now a museum, wss built in 1883 as the winter residence of Franklin Smith. It is built 1/10th the scale of a section of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain.
