Anniversary in Yaroslavl (06.2011)

It was supposed to be Europe for our 20th anniversary, but not knowing if Susan might need another surgery on her thumb, we decided to conserve our resources and headed north for a four day weekend. We spent two nights in the village of Vyatskoe as guests of Oleg Zharov who's made it his mission to revitalize and restore this town of one thousand residents, followed by two nights in the region's capital, Yaroslavl - a 1001 year old city on the Volga River in what's known as Russia's Golden Ring. It took us more than seven hours to drive the 150 miles north thanks to Moscow's infamous traffic jams and mediocre to poor roads, and once there we encountered heat, humidity and monster mosquitoes, but it's about togetherness... right?

  • The Cinema Club's lobby café.
  • Cinema Club reception.
  • Flowers in the stairwell of the Cinema Club Hotel.
  • Door to our hotel room. Our room was based on the classic Soviet film [and novel], "Twelve Chairs".
  • The Twelve Chairs suite at the Cinema Club Hotel. Each room is designed based on a classic Soviet or Russian film. When Rustem told me about the hotel, I though it'd be kitschy, but it works.
  • Sofa in the Twelve Chairs suite.
  • The embodiment of one of the twelve chairs.
  • Wild flowers Rustem bought for our room.
  • A mini balcony overlooking the boulevard minutes from the Yaroslavl Kremlin.
  • View from our hotel room window.
  • Wallpaper detail in our room. These original newspaper & magazines pages were made into wallpaper.
  • Why newspapers? In the film the lead characters paper their walls with newspapers. They couldn't afford a chandelier so had a simple light bulb hanging from the ceiling, as did our room. Maybe carrying it a bit too far...
  • Fashion News & the Third International.
  • May 1st. Global Communism.
  • Susan as Tsarina in the Ivan Vasilievich dining room.
  • Mural in the Ivan Vasilievich dining room. In this classic comedy, a man builds a time machine in his typical Soviet apartment. He, the building super & a host of other characters end up during the time of Ivan The Terrible, while Tsar Ivan ends up in early 70's Moscow. Hilarious! I've seen this film many times & it's a fave.
  • Enjoying our dining experience at the Cinema Club.
  • Of course we had to order a classic Russian dish - Pozharski cutlet with grilled potatoes & red pepper. The Pozharsi cutlet dates from the mid-1800's & consists of ground chicken covered in bread cubes & fried. Not exactly low cal, but delicious.
  • The restaurant's bathroom has doors like an elevator (the hotel does not have a real elevator). You push the buttons to open or close them. Similar doors close off the hotel's stairwell at night. Fun gimmick.
  • Gypsy entertainment in the dining room.
