October Revolution Day
Before the collapse of the USSR, November 7th was a major holiday commemorating the "Great October Revolution", which occurred in October 1917 according to the Julian calendar, but November 7th according to the Gregorian calendar. No longer a state holiday, thousands still take to the streets to demonstrate their support of the Communist Party. Some long for the days when the USSR was a superpower providing a stable, predictable existence; others, most notably the young, want to transform Russia's future. (November 7, 2010)
