Northeast of Moscow lies a ring of ancient Russian towns known as the Golden Ring. The Church of St Demetrius of the Spilled Blood, built in 1692 by order of Peter the Great. It commemorates the murder of Prince Dimitry, the youngest son of Czar Ivan the Terrible in 1591. The church is painted red as a reminder that blood was spilled on this site centuries ago. The church is located in Uglich, founded in 1148, on the Volga River.
