Northeast of Moscow lies a ring of ancient Russian towns known as the Golden Ring. Many of the towns are more than 1,000 years old, and all are of historical and religious importance, known for their architectural splendors. This trip to the Yaroslavl Oblast encompassed visits to the region's administrative center, Yaroslavl, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Uglich, and Rybinsk; all situated along the Volga River.

The Church of St Demetrius of the Spilled Blood, built in 1692 by order of Peter the Great. It commemorates the murder of Prince Dimitry, the youngest son of Czar Ivan the Terrible in 1591. The church is painted red as a reminder that blood was spilled on this site centuries ago. The church is located in Uglich, founded in 1148, on the Volga River.
