Kaluga Region (07.2010)

Less than 200 kilometers from Moscow, the Kalugua region is both agricultural & industrial. Founded in the 14th century, present day Kaluga is a hub of Russia's automotive industry with major European & Japanese manufacturers operating or opening plants there. Located on the Oka River, 60% of the region's land is agricultural. Midway between Moscow & Kaluga in the Kaluga Region is the pastoral town of Borovsk. Once occupied by Napoleon, this now secluded town of 12,000 has acquired notoriety for the murals painted on its buildings. The work of an amateur painter, Vladimir Ovchinnikov's murals depict historical events & figures, and everyday life. His wall murals attract tourists and, more recently, the ire of the local administration who do not appreciate some of his satirical paintings. A short, nearby trip but difficult none-the-less as we stayed in 3 different hotels the first three days. Why? Don't ask, don't tell.
