Project RuSu 365

Not always so successful or interesting, & not always daily, though certainly a reflection of our daily lives - more like pick of the day. Our goal - to share our world and improve our skills. Thanks to all the members of the SmugMug Daily Community for your support and input. Feel free to leave feedback by clicking on 'Add Comment' below. We look forward to hearing your thoughts. The photo of the day will always be in first position. Thank you for looking. - Rustem Safronov & Susan Gilman a.k.a. RuSu. This gallery was started on October 26, 2010.

 • Seto teenagers in national dress. Of Estonian origin, Setos are a protected minority in Russia where only 200 remain.
Hope those who celebrated had a good Memorial Day weekend. (5.31.2011)
 • In honor of Memorial Day weekend, here's one from our archives. This is the American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, overlooking Omaha Beach in Normandy. There are 9,383 U.S. service men & 4 women buried here. The cemetery remains U.S. territory.
 • Freckle faced school girl.

School's out for summer as of yesterday. Uniforms are quite common in Russian schools. Bows for the girls & sport coats for the boys are de rigueur especially on the first & last days of school, as are flowers for the teacher. (5.28.2011)
 • № 52A. (5.27.2011)

It's Friday & many of you are heading into Memorial Day weekend so hope you're off to a good start.
 • Russian prianki fresh out of the oven. Often compared to gingerbread, they're more like a dry honey cake as there's no ginger in them. These heart-shaped cakes say, "I give this to the one I love". (5.26.2011)
 • The Cliffs of Etretat. (Normandy, France)

One from the archives today as yesterday was just too long a day without any definitive answers. Too tired & demoralized to shoot. This is from a trip we made to celebrate our 16th anniversary. Next month will be our 20th, but our planned trip is on hold at the moment. Hope you're having a good day. (5.25.2011)
 • Russian Doukhobor lady. With beliefs similar to Quakers, the Doukhobors were persecuted in Czarist Russia &, with the help of the writer Leo Tolstoy, immigrated to the prairies of Canada. Some remain in Russia today mostly living near Tolstoy's former estate. (5.24.2011)
Off to another specialist so posting before the new Smug day begins. Have a good one!
 • On a clear day... (5.23.2011)

Appreciate your comments on yesterday's post. Framing may have been better than the shot, but we all need to have fun sometimes.
 • Up very early & had some time to play around, so thought I'd post something light for this beautiful Sunday morning. Hope your day is filled with sunshine. (5.22.2011)

Wishing all a good weekend.
 • Apricot overflow. Rue Cler. (Paris)
 • Dancers of North Ossetia's award winning folk dance ensemble, Iriston, in traditional Caucasian (from the Caucasus Mountains) dress performing a wedding dance in Vladikavkaz. (5.18.2011)
 • Waitress with 'zelonka' & a diamond nose piercing.

Zelonka is an antiseptic first used in the 19th century and still widely used in Russia. Usually you see kids running around with green dabbed on various cuts & scrapes. I saw a question on a blog asking why zelonka's only used in Russia and the reply was, "Because westerners won't go out in public with green on their faces". Better to stick with Bacitracin. (5.17.2011)
 • Orthodox Priests at the Alansky Epiphany Monastery in Kurtatin Gorge, North Ossetia. (5.16.2011)

Thanks for your comments on yesterday's collage. As I understand, the people at that particular camp don't receive help from the U.N. because the camp is located in disputed territory. Will have to check my facts. As for sending something, will have to look into the logistics of that, too.

Hope your week starts off right.
 • Billie Jean had requested a photo of the refugee camp where the last two portraits posted were taken and, quite honestly, there isn't a single great shot or one that captures the futility of life for those who have spent 20 years in the camp. I put this collage together hoping to show not only the conditions, but the meaninglessness of life without purpose and the unbroken exuberance of youth. (5.15.2011)

Count your blessings & enjoy your Sunday.
 • Hope springs eternal... Little Vika has spent her entire life in a refugee camp in N. Ossetia. She walks 4 kilometers to school each day & dreams of becoming a gymnast. (5.13.2011)

Thank you again for your wonderful comments on yesterday's shot. Ultimately it doesn't matter who's right or wrong in these conflicts, it's people who suffer, especially little ones like Vika. TGIF - hope it's a good one for all of you.
 • A refugee from the former Soviet Republic of Georgia, this Ossetian woman has lived in a refugee camp in North Ossetia for almost 20 years. (5.12.2011)

Thanks for all your wonderful comments & feedback about yesterday's portrait.
 • Friend & colleague Ulyana Goncharova, Rusiya Al-Yaum. (5.11.2011)

Sorry for the sporadic posting & commenting, but it's been a rough few weeks. Hope to be back in the swing of things soon. Regards to all.
 • Today's the 2nd most important/celebrated holiday in Russia - Victory Day - commemorating the end of the war against Nazi Germany. Here's one from the files of a veteran showing a photo of himself during WWII. In memory of all veterans & those who died, suffered & continue to do so.

Hope your week starts off on a good note. (5.9.2011)

Off early today so am posting even before the new Smug day begins. Going to see another specialist hoping for some answers. Have a good day. (5.5.2011)
