The Gypsy in him. (4.8.2012)<br /> <br /> Yesterday a friend of ours celebrated his 50th birthday. It was a half-day, over-the-top event in true Russian style with Gypsies, showgirls, and a gluttony of food & drink. Rustem's 1/4 Gypsy - that, and the flowing vodka moved his spirit. Unfortunately, he's out of focus, but I like the feeling captured with the woman's flowing skirt. <br /> <br /> The Gypsy troupe that performed were from the Romen Theater, the only professional Gypsy theater in the world, founded in 1931. <br /> <br /> Sorry I didn't have time to comment on yesterday's Dailies. Yesterday a friend of ours celebrated his 50th birthday. It was a half-day, over-the-top event in true Russian style with Gypsies, showgirls, and a gluttony of food & drink. Rustem's 1/4 Gypsy - that, and the flowing vodka moved his spirit. Unfortunately, he's out of focus, but I like the feeling captured with the woman's flowing skirt.

The Gypsy troupe that performed were from the Romen Theater, the only professional Gypsy theater in the world, founded in 1931.

Sorry I didn't have time to comment on yesterday's Dailies. Wishing all a Happy Easter!

  • Locked out. (5.1.2012)<br /> <br /> The thumbs-downer's been locked out, hopefully for good. Must be very frustrated today :)
  • Nenets yurt (tent) & reindeer. (4.16.2012)<br /> <br /> Not a new shot, but one we just learned is to be included in an exhibit on prehistory at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences' Museum. The exhibit's scheduled to run from October 16th of this year through May 26, 2013. Of course, October's a long way off & things can change, but... May just have to schedule a trip to Brussels...<br /> <br /> On another note, the thumbs downer has been so active recently that I'm going to take a break from the Dailies - it just isn't very enjoyable of late. I looked at the top 30 shots from yesterday when I had a moment Moscow morning time today. The shots with the most comments were Papa's & Billie's each with 34 comments. Papa's was in 6th position; Billie's in 17th. Next up with quantity of comments were Paul B. (Jr.), Paula B., Webstersway & my egg shot - each with 31 comments - position of these shots? 5th, 2nd, 1st & 26th respectively. Someone really disliked my egg shot, that's for sure. This person was at it again this A.M. downing Indigo's shot within minutes of it coming up.<br /> <br /> Thanks to those of you who've been supportive & many of you for your friendship. We may be back, but it's time for a break. Happy shooting.
  • Russian Easter eggs. (4.15.2012)<br /> <br /> A real first for me; making Easter eggs. I was attracted to a kit enabling one to do eggs in traditional Russian styles with traditional scenes. I think they came out quite nice. Guess it'll be egg salad for lunch tomorrow.
  • Russian Easter Cake. (4.14.2012)<br /> <br /> Known as a kulich, they're very much like an Italian Panettone. The 'XB' in Cyrillic letters stands for "Christ has risen'. There was a priest in the supermarket blessing these.

  • The end of the season? (4.5.2012)<br /> <br /> Snapped this as Rustem headed out the door to finish off what he says is the end of the ski season. I hope he's right, though we got another couple of inches today. You won't be seeing any flower shots from us any time soon.<br /> <br /> Thanks to all those who've kept in touch. I'm in a bit of a slump.

  • What was Lenin up to? Original equipment in the lab of Lenin's gymnasium.
  • Driving a 'Top-Top' through the streets of Tatarsky Saiman. <br /> <br /> More than 200 residents of this village drive some kind of homemade vehicle known as 'Top-Tops'. The tradition started more than 50 years ago when it was difficult to purchase a car due to finances & shortages. The head of the village council first made one & it caught on. People would gather parts of discarded, broken-down vehicles & make their own, often assembling their own engines. Now, it's a tradition that villagers are quite proud of. Needless to say, they come in all kinds of configurations.

(3.14.2012)<br /> <br /> I don't mean to steal Phil's song title series, but couldn't come up with anything else for this votive candle holder seen in a church in Rome. I liked that the holder resembles the tree of life and loved the colored candle holders which I hadn't seen before.
  • The colors of Rome. (3.13.2012)<br /> <br /> Picked up an assignment on Sunday that's been keeping me busy the past few days, so here's one from our January trip to Rome. I'm still trying to get through our shots from this trip, but haven't made much progress. Have been trying to keep up on commenting.
  • EKE - it's a car! (3.10.2012)<br /> <br /> For all the car enthusiasts in our community, I thought you might get a kick out of this. I've seen some pretty small cars throughout Europe, but this has to be the smallest ever - I felt as if I towered over it & I'm only 5'. Seems it's a relatively new type of car classified as a micro-car that runs on diesel - yikes or should I say yeaks!<br /> <br /> Special thanks to Billie for suggesting yesterday's challenge. It was wonderful that so many participated with so many interesting & creative shots. I'd love to know how some of them were created - perhaps there should have been a caveat suggesting a view of the original shot - anyway great stuff & congrats to all.

    * In addition to my comments on this photo regarding Easter traditions, I'd like to tell something I postponed for long time :)

    The word "Rusu" in Romanian, actually means "The Russian" and it's a quite common family name in this country... just do a Google search for Rusu - all those names are of Romanians :)
