  • Seto teenagers in national dress. Of Estonian origin, Setos are a protected minority in Russia where only 200 remain. <br /> <br /> Hope those who celebrated had a good Memorial Day weekend. (5.31.2011)
  • In honor of Memorial Day weekend, here's one from our archives. This is the American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, overlooking Omaha Beach in Normandy. There are 9,383 U.S. service men & 4 women buried here. The cemetery remains U.S. territory.
  • Freckle faced school girl. <br /> <br /> School's out for summer as of yesterday. Uniforms are quite common in Russian schools. Bows for the girls & sport coats for the boys are de rigueur especially on the first & last days of school, as are flowers for the teacher. (5.28.2011)

  • Russian prianki fresh out of the oven. Often compared to gingerbread, they're more like a dry honey cake as there's no ginger in them. These heart-shaped cakes say, "I give this to the one I love". (5.26.2011)
  • The Cliffs of Etretat. (Normandy, France) <br /> <br /> One from the archives today as yesterday was just too long a day without any definitive answers. Too tired & demoralized to shoot. This is from a trip we made to celebrate our 16th anniversary. Next month will be our 20th, but our planned trip is on hold at the moment. Hope you're having a good day. (5.25.2011)
  • Russian Doukhobor lady. With beliefs similar to Quakers, the Doukhobors were persecuted in Czarist Russia &, with the help of the writer Leo Tolstoy, immigrated to the prairies of Canada.   • Waitress with 'zelonka' & a diamond nose piercing.<br /> <br /> Zelonka is an antiseptic first used in the 19th century and still widely used in Russia. Usually you see kids running around with green dabbed on various cuts & scrapes. I saw a question on a blog asking why zelonka's only used in Russia and the reply was, "Because westerners won't go out in public with green on their faces". Better to stick with Bacitracin. As I understand, the people at that particular camp don't receive help from the U.N. because the camp is located in disputed territory. Will have to check my facts. As for sending something, will have to look into the logistics of that, too.<br /> <br /> Hope your week starts off right.
  • Billie Jean had requested a photo of the refugee camp where the last two portraits posted were taken and, quite honestly, there isn't a single great shot or one that captures the futility of life for those who have spent 20 years in the camp. I put this collage together hoping to show not only the conditions, but the meaninglessness of life without purpose and the unbroken exuberance of youth.   • Hope springs eternal... Little Vika has spent her entire life in a refugee camp in N. Ossetia. She walks 4 kilometers to school each day & dreams of becoming a gymnast.
