Henri Cartier-Bresson said, "Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst.", so bear with us...
"Science & religion are two windows that people look through, trying to understand the big universe outside, trying to understand why we are here. The two windows give different views, but both look out at the same universe. Both views are one-sided, neither is complete. Both leave out essential features of the real world. And both are worthy of respect." ~Freeman Dyson, British-born, American theoretical physicist & mathematician.
Taken in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia's 5th largest city & an industrial powerhouse, I was struck by the contrast of the simple lines & purity of form & color of this church against the chaotic, industrial greys of the city across the frozen river. Nizhny is probably most famous for being the birthplace of writer Maxim Gorky & place of exile of Nobel Peace Prize winning physicist, Andrei Sakharov. (11.29.2011)

on May 7, 2012Embodies the remarkable complexity of Russian culture - the beauty of their older buildings in contrast to the starkness of their modern architecture, the creativeness of and contributions by their writers, artists and scientists relative to the incomprehensible suffering that millions of Russians have experienced over the past century. My father spent considerable time in Russia during the 60's and brought back many intriguing photos and stories. So it is with real pleasure that I view your photos and read your commentary on present day Russia.

on December 2, 2011This is really a stunning shot and I can see why it got the recognition that it did! The contrast in itself is major, but the starkness of the white church against the snow and the crisp lines outlining it really make it a striking image!
