Project RuSu 365

Not always so successful or interesting, & not always daily, though certainly a reflection of our daily lives - more like pick of the day. Our goal - to share our world and improve our skills. Thanks to all the members of the SmugMug Daily Community for your support and input. Feel free to leave feedback by clicking on 'Add Comment' below. We look forward to hearing your thoughts. The photo of the day will always be in first position. Thank you for looking. - Rustem Safronov & Susan Gilman a.k.a. RuSu. This gallery was started on October 26, 2010.

Yikes - there's a cat in the kitchen!
Thanks for all your wonderful comments on yesterday's Maslenitsa - girl with pancakes shot. Sunday will be the end of the holiday when an effigy of winter will be burned. I'll be making pancakes in the morning. (03.04.2011)

 • Didn't have time to post or comment yesterday & today won't be much better, so here's one from our Arizona trip. We took a Pink Jeep tour while there & here's our jeep parked at our 1st stop atop Submarine rock. Highly recommend this tour if you make it to Sedona.

Hope to catch up with commenting tomorrow & hope everyone had a good weekend. (03.07.11)
 • Looking out on a winter day. Who said spring has sprung?
Have a good weekend! (03.05.11)

 • Some people have Mardi Gras, others have Carnavale. Russia has Maslenitsa, also known as Pancake Week. Originally a pagan festival celebrating the end of winter, today's Maslenitsa is a time of [over] indulgence before the start of Lent, and a celebration of the end of winter. The pancakes (blini in Russian), which are more like crêpes, symbolize the sun. Let's hope they'll be an early end to winter this year.

The samovar with the teapot on top is done in traditional Russian style known as Khokhlama.
 • Police at work arresting a drunk on the street. (Rybinsk, Russia)
 • Chopping blocks of ice to take home for water. (Laytamak, Siberia, Russia)
 • With no indoor plumbing, this man heads out to the river where he'll cut blocks of ice to carry home to be used as the family's water source. You don't want to know how cold the outhouse was.

Thanks for all your comments on yesterday's cathedral.
Hope your week starts off well.
 • Foreboding skies over the Cathedral of the Transfiguration in Abakan, Khakassia. (Russia)
 • Machine grinding a bowl at one of Russia's best-known glass works. Founded in 1756, The Crystal Goose Factory has fallen on hard times, but continues to operate. (Vladimir Oblast, Russia) (Гусь Хрустальный)
 • Cross atop Moneron Island.

Thanks for all your comments on yesterday's shot of northern Sakhalin's coastline. Kreston Refslund asked if that was where an airliner had been shot down by the Soviets - good memory Kreston. In fact, it was off the coast of this island, Moneron Island, that Korean Airline's flight 007 was shot down in 1983, killing all aboard. Once occupied by the Japanese, this uninhabited island off the coast of Sakhalin, is now a [Russian] national park, though incredibly difficult to get to.

The nearby Kuril Island are still disputed territory between Russia & Japan who have yet to sign a peace treaty since the end of WWII (simplistically put). Had hoped to visit the Kuril Islands, but couldn't get permission... maybe one day.

• Near Nogliki on the Sea of Okhotsk.
(North Sakhalin, Russian Far East)
 • Today's a holiday known as Defenders of the Fatherland Day (formerly known as Soviet Army Day) in Russia, so in honor of the holiday here's one from the files of a Soviet Navy Captain who fought in the Pacific against the Japanese during WWII. (Sakhalin, Russia)

Thanks for all your comments on yesterday's sunset.
 • Siberian sunset. (Tobolsk, Russia)
 • Selenga River.
 • Lighting a candle at prayer as is Russian Orthodox custom.
 • From the files and a fascinating trip to the Nenets Autonomous District in Russia's far north above the Arctic Circle. This Nenets baby is bundled up in her swing inside her nomadic family's tent, known as a chum. The tundra area where they live is accessible only by helicopter, no matter what the season.

Thanks for your comments on yesterday's shot.
Hope everyone has a good weekend.
 • Walkin' the baby back home. (Yaroslavl, Russia)
Not too inspired today, but rather than dig into the archives again... Very cold here -23C (-10F) & hate having to even go out. Thanks for yesterdays' feedback.
 • Russian beauty dancing in the snow.
 • Art gallery sign. (Montmarte, Paris).
No SC involved. This is the way it was.

No time for comments yesterday as I was at the hospital having a cast put on my hand, but thanks for your comments on my collage. Today's shot is from the files.
 • For a chuckle or a shiver, my 1st try at a collage, with scenes from Uglich. None of the individual shots came out very well, but I thought you might find it amusing. This was a balmy day of around -5 Celsius (low 20s Farenheit) so it was a good day to take a plunge. Russians of all ages just love doing this - good for your health, they say - and the people who participate in this activity are known as walruses. She looks a bit like a walrus, doesn't she?

Thanks for all your comments of yesterday's church. Hope you had an enjoyable Valentine's Day.
