Project RuSu 365

Not always so successful or interesting, & not always daily, though certainly a reflection of our daily lives - more like pick of the day. Our goal - to share our world and improve our skills. Thanks to all the members of the SmugMug Daily Community for your support and input. Feel free to leave feedback by clicking on 'Add Comment' below. We look forward to hearing your thoughts. The photo of the day will always be in first position. Thank you for looking. - Rustem Safronov & Susan Gilman a.k.a. RuSu. This gallery was started on October 26, 2010.

Before the collapse of the USSR, November 7th was a major holiday commemorating the "Great October Revolution", which occurred in October 1917 according to the Julian calendar, but November 7th according to the Gregorian calendar. No longer a state holiday, thousands still take to the streets to demonstrate their support of the Communist Party. Many, like this man, long for the days when Stalin ruled - when Russia was an orderly superpower with guaranteed social benefits. His placard with Stalin's photo reads, "The people are waiting". These adorable cousins are from the former Soviet Republic of Uzbekistan. Unable to find work in their country, their parents came to Moscow seeking employment. The mothers of these girls work as 'concierges' - watching who comes & goes and cleaning the foyers of the buildings they live in. In return for their labor they get a room barely large enough to hold a twin-sized bed, and payment from those residents who "choose" to pay them. Payment is optional and it never ceases to amaze me how many refuse to pay $6.50/month for the services of someone who works 16 hours a day, 6 days a week.

The room they live in has no bathing facilities, so the girls often come to our apartment to bathe. They'd never heard of a bubble bath, but once they experienced one, they were hooked. (SG)
