  • Evenk girl in traditional head dress. (8.5.2011)<br /> <br /> I suppose this could also be called, 'knowing when to give up' or 'don't get attached to a shot that's lacking the basics'. There were so many problems with this shot, but I like the look this girl's giving Rustem. Is she flirting with him? The camera? (He said it was the camera.) I took it to B&W as I just couldn't get the skin tones right, but she has such a pretty head dress I didn't want to lose it. Don't like the PP? Blame Susan. Have a good Friday.

  • Cottage used by Russian paleontologists in Blagoveshchensk. (8.2.2011)<br /> <br /> There's just something I like about this despite it's faults - the wind blowing the curtains, the traditional samovar on the table, & those large casts of dinosaur bones on the floor. Paleontologists cast the bones in plaster while still in the earth so they won't break when removed. These casts are of the bones of the Amurosauras, first discovered in 1991 by paleontologists Yuri Bolotsky and Sergei Kurzanov. <br /> <br /> Thanks to all for the welcome back & the comments on yesterday's berry shot.

  • Young Oriental White Storks (Ciconia boyciana) high up in their nest in the Amur Region's Muraviovka Park. (7.19.2011)<br /> <br /> Not the best shot, but I thought the birders might be interested in seeing this this rare stork of which there are only about 2500 remaining in the world. A carnivorous stork with a wing span of more than 2 meters (7 feet), the Oriental White Stork is an endangered species that breeds only in the Amur-Heilong basin.
  • Kindergartener with sparkling eyes. This is a little Evenk boy in the village of Ivanovskoye, a two hour helicopter flight from the Amur Region's capital of Blagoveshchensk. The kindergarten he attends puts emphasis on retaining Evenk cultural identity. (7.18.2011)
